Highland Capital, one of the top alternative investment firms in the US reached an agreement to launch a $147 billion investment in the South Korean healthcare markets at their office location in South Korea. This investment will be backed by the National Pension Service (NPS) and also conducted in partnership with Korean investment firm Stonebridge Capital. According to Deal Street Asia, this is actually Highland Capital’s first health care private equity investment in Asia and Highland Capital’s leaders are pleased with the outcome of the deal. Highland Capital’s leaders said they’ve taken interest in Asia’s healthcare due to some of the changes in the US in the aftermath of the ACA.
Highland Capital has been managing billions in client assets and has over 20 years of experience bringing distressed businesses back to making profits again. Highland Capital is run by Chairman and CEO James Dondero, and Chief Investment Officer Mark Okada. Dondero has been known for being a leader in collateralized loan obligations and bringing them to Highland Capital as part of their investment package. Other investments that Highland Capital offers are fixed income funds, high-yield credit, emerging markets and real estate. Highland Capital Management is also a partner company to NexPoint Advisors and Acis Capital Management.
Prior to founding Highland Capital, James Dondero attended the University of Virginia where he graduated with very high honors in accounting and finance. He later received certification to be a chartered financial analyst and first became a credit researcher and later portfolio manager for American Express. He was later offered the opportunity to grow Protective Life Insurance Company’s GIC subsidiary along with Okada, and the two men took the concept company public and raised over $2 billion in AUM. In five years Dondero and Okada had bought out all the controlling shares in the company and renamed it to Highland Capital Management. In the years since they’ve not only accumulated very high-profile clients, they’ve also given back to the community including supporting veterans and local law enforcement foundations, and domestic violence shelters such as the Family Place where they recently raised funds to complete a facility.
